Sometimes, despite the best efforts, a marriage may no longer be sustainable and comes to an end. Divorce is a very painful and stressful event for everyone involved, even for the person asking for the divorce. It’s right up there with there with the death of a loved one, in terms of stress and emotional upheaval. Most times, there is a myriad of emotions to manage, including loss and grief, anger, and betrayal. The process of divorce often amplifies those feelings, making things worse.

Sometimes, we hear about amicable divorces – maybe friends have managed to do it, or we hear about celebrities divorcing peaceably. But most of the time, we hear about contentious divorces. Whilst amicable divorces are seldomly reached, a divorce doesn’t have to be contentious either. With help, other workable possibilities can be achieved.

This is especially important when children are involved. In contentious marital breakdowns, the children can often become the battlefield where the parents, perhaps without meaning to, continue the fight well after the divorce is finalised, with the children in the middle. This can negatively affect the children’s emotional well-being, as well as increase behavioural issues at home which, in turn, add to the contention between the parents.

“Are you not sure if it’s the right thing to do or if now is the right time?”

Does that scenario sound familiar? Or are you worried that, if you start divorce proceedings, it will turn nasty? Or are you just thinking of getting a divorce, but not sure if it’s the right thing to do or if now is the right time? If you’ve answered ‘yes’ to any of those questions and would like to talk about it, just email me.
